Movin

By Group 1 Crew

If you really wanna move you got to get movin’. Nothing left to do except to just do it. If you want it go and get it. You don’t have to wait anymore. I can hear him calling. Step through the door where anything is possible.”

My room is a mess. It’s been a mess for weeks, maybe even months. I don’t know, I lost track…it’s been a while since I last gave my room a good cleaning. Point is my messy room is causing me stress. You’re probably asking, “Bailey, if your room is that messy that it’s stressing you out, why don’t you just clean it?” Well, I know I need to clean it, and my heart really wants to clean, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet because…

I am lazy!

You see, I am a procrastinator. I put things off until theblast minute. Even at this moment as I am writing this Selah Saturday message, I should probably be working on my final project for school. It’s due on Sunday and I haven’t even started working on it 😬

I find my messy room, and the fact that my room is even a mess in the first place, very embarrassing. So why am I sharing this with you? First, it is to publicly confess that I am a slothful person and I have yet to overcome the sin of slothfulness. Secondly, I want to share how this problem takes over my life and how I have recognized that some serious discipline needs to take place.

I am not a perfect and clean person. At work, I am super organized. If you come to my house, you will see a clean living room, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom. But what you don’t see are the piles of laundry that need to get put away, or the countless papers and books scattered across my desk. It’s kind of the same way with my mind. I may seem okay on the outside, but you can’t see what is cluttering up my mind and causing me stress and anxiety. The only way you’re going to see my messy room is if I invite you into my home and allow you to see it. So today, that’s what I’m going to do (metaphorically speaking).

After I finally get around to doing a deep clean of my room, it’ll stay that way for a week or two. After maybe about two weeks, things start to sit out instead of get put away. About a month later we’re back to a cluttered room. I won’t do another deep cleaning for a few months. And the cycle repeats itself. It all goes downhill once I decide not to put “that one thing” away.

When my room is a mess, it makes my mind feel cluttered. I start to slack off in other areas of my life as well. I become less motivated to keep up with healthy habits. I become lazy and procrastinate important work. What’s worse is that when my room is a mess, my spiritual life is also a mess and I often don’t take as much time to spend with God as I should. Like how I would be embarrassed to show you my messy room, I’m embarrassed to let God in and see what clutters my mind, even though he already knows.

But praise God that he still loves us even when he sees our messes!

One of the reasons why I constantly go down this spiral of cluttering up my life, physically and mentally, is because I lack discipline. I need to be more disciplined in all aspects of life, from the spiritual to the physical.

Disciplining oneself is hard work, and it requires you to get up and moving. Change doesn’t come by just sitting around and being lazy. I heard in a sermon once, “Discipline is choosing what you want the most over what you want now,” and to, “Choose discipline over regret” (Pastor Craig Groeschel). This really motivates me to get my butt up and moving—to get rid of old habits and create new, healthy ones.

As I was thinking about my messy room and my undisciplined lifestyle, I was reminded of the song, “Movin’,” by Group 1 Crew. This song convicts me of my slothfulness, especially the whole first verse. “Movin’” reminds us that we know what is best for us and what the right thing to do is, so we need to just get up and do it. It’s time to put aside what is holding us down and killing our growth. It is not enough to just wish you could change or grow; you must actually do something about it.

It’s time for me to get moving and clean my room. It’s time for me to get moving and workout to build up some much-needed muscle. It’s time for me to get moving and finish off the school semester strong.

In what area of your life do you need to get up and moving?

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11
